Indian Giant Squirrel (Ratufa indica) – Throughout the NBR, one can hear the sputtering machine gun chatter of these giants of the rodent kingdom. These ancient squirrels are listed under ‘least concern’ on the endangered species list but are still threatened by habitat loss.
Lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) – Very rarely spotted, these highly territorial monkeys get their common name from their impressive mane of grey hair framing their face. Only 1% of the original habitat remains today due to widespread deforestation.
Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) – Locally known as ‘varai aadu or cliff goat’, this endemic goat is limited to only 2000 numbers in the wild. The species now face extinction due to genetic isolation, specialized habitat requirements and low reproductive rates.
Indian Gaur (Bos gaurus) – The largest bovines in the world, they have almost zero enemies in the wild due to their sheer size. Though they are timid and avoid confrontation, recent years have seen an increase in conflicts with humans.
